Jamaica’s Kishane Thompson Registers Sizzling World-Leading Time of 9.77 Seconds

Kishane Thompson made headlines with a stunning performance, clocking the fastest time in the world in two years .

Thompson secured victory at the Jamaica 100-meter national championship on Friday night, finishing in 9.77 seconds.

Following his triumph, the 22-year-old Thompson revealed his coach’s strategy: “My coach instructed me to just run the first 60, nothing more.

After that, I should just shut it down. If I came in second or third, I make the team. The goal wasn’t to do anything, just to run a 70 or 60 and see where I am at.”

Remarkably, this race marked Thompson’s first appearance of the year and his first experience running rounds.

He had already impressed by posting a 9.82 in his opening heat on Thursday night, despite dealing with a late-night session with doping control officers.

Thompson’s victory saw him best Oblique Seville, a semifinalist at the Tokyo Olympics who had earlier secured a win over Noah Lyles.

His time of 9.77 seconds is the fastest since American Fred Kerley won the 2022 world championships with a time of 9.76 seconds. This performance makes Thompson the fourth-fastest Jamaican in history, behind Usain Bolt, Yohan Blake, and Asafa Powell.

“I am not sure how fast I can go, but the time did not surprise me tonight,” Thompson remarked, hinting at even greater potential.

Bolt’s world record of 9.58 seconds, set in 2009, still stands as the benchmark.
