Why Were Jamaicans Denied Entry to Trinidad? JMA Wants Answers
In recent years there have been numerous complaints of inhumane and unfair treatment being meted out to Jamaicans attempting to enter Trinidad.
After arriving at the Piarco International Airport in Trinidad last month, 12 Jamaicans were prevented from entering the country.
The somewhat vague reason given for their denial of entry by the Trinidad and Tobago Government was that: they were “deemed likely to become charges on public funds”.
Now the Jamaica Manufacturers’ Association, (JMA) is requesting the government to provide more information on its handling of the situation regarding Trinidad’s denial of entry to Jamaican nationals.
According to Irie FM, the JMA President Metry Sega recently stated that blanket statements from the Foreign Affairs Ministry about holding discussions with Trinidad authorities, are inadequate.
Mr Seaga is also calling on government to implement stricter sanctions on Trinidad for its alleged breach of the Regional Free Movement Agreement and human rights.
In a statement yesterday, the JMA says it is deeply disturbed by the recent denial of entry of Jamaicans to Trinidad and Tobago.
Mr Seaga says the action represents a blatant disregard for the binding commitment undertaken by Trinidad and Tobago, to the goal of free movement of CARICOM nationals without discrimination on the grounds of nationality, as stipulated by the revised Treaty of Chaguaramas.
Mr Seaga says the approach taken by Trinidad and Tobago is divisive at best and the JMA strongly urges the Government of Jamaica to act swiftly in addressing this recurring blight on the right of the Jamaican people.
The JMA President also recommended that the Jamaican government take immediate action to ensure compliance with regional agreements, to include, but not limited to, imposing duties or a boycott.
