Hurricane Maria Approaches Caribbean, Expected To Strengthen Rapidly

Hurricane Maria is forecast to strengthen greatly over the next two days as it heads towards the Caribbean.

The most recent update from the National Hurricane Center’s latest update says “significant strengthening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Maria is expected to become a dangerous major hurricane before it moves through the Leeward Islands.”

At 5 am on Monday, the storm was approximately 100 miles east of Martinique and about 130 miles east-southeast of Dominica.

Maria is currently a Category 1 hurricane with winds of 90 miles per hour and is expected to continue its trek toward the eastern Caribbean at 13 mph.

Forecasters say the storm will likely intensify greatly becoming a category 3 or 4 hurricane by the time it makes it way into the extreme northeastern Caribbean Sea.

America’s National Hurricane Center says the centre of Maria will move across the Leeward Islands late today and tonight, and then over the extreme northeastern Caribbean Sea Tuesday and Tuesday night.

A tropical storm warning is already in effect for Antigua and Barbuda, Saba, St. Eustatius and St. Lucia. Barbuda was recently rendered uninhabitable after more than 90 percent of the buildings on the small island were either partially or totally destroyed by Hurricane Irma. At least 82 deaths have been attributed to Irma throughout the Caribbean and the United States.
