Jamaican Chef Runner-Up in Food Network’s ‘Chopped Champions’

Jamaican-born chef Andre Fowles was impressive on Tuesday night when he finished in second place in the finale of season five of the Food Network TV’s ‘Chopped Champions’.

Fowles qualified for the ‘Chopped Champions’ tournament after defeating his competition in the precursor tournament – Chopped.

That victory saw the  26-year-old walk away with $US 10,000.

He is also the first Jamaican-born and the youngest chef to compete in the highly acclaimed reality cooking show.

Despite not being a chef for a very long period of time, the former Donald Quarrie High School and Runaway Bay HEART Academy graduate is noted to have very cultured dexterity in the kitchen, and prepares his dishes with a vitality that has apparently sprung from his upbringing in Kingston.

His recipes drew on his Jamaican heritage and pretty much everything he learned from his grandmother, Veronica Davis, who is popularly known as ‘Mama Cherry’.

In the semi-finals, Fowles mesmerized with his preparation of crab dumplings with curry, a rack of wild boar entree with kale pesto, and a cake dessert with a duck mousse cream, sea bean brittle and raspberry coulis.

Commenting on the differences between his appearance in the championships and his previous time on ‘Chopped’, Fowles said there was much more pressure and competition now, as his competitors have also been winners on the show.

He also described the baskets of food presented for use in the dessert round as “brutal”.

Had he won the finals, Fowles intended to use the money to purchase a house and to pursue his dream of being a caterer.

He is currently the resident sous chef at Miss Lily’s, an authentic and vibrant Jamaican restaurant in New York.
