PM Holness Break Some Promises If You Must

There has been a flurry of excitement concerning the implementation of the tax proposal made by the Jamaica Labour Party.

Many Jamaicans earning 1.5 million dollars or below are eagerly awaiting the significant tax relief that would result from not having to pay the monthly income tax.

There seems to be an abounding perception that this promise along with all other promises made by the Jamaica Labour Party should be implemented immediately and that a failure to act accordingly would be indicative of the Party’s being disingenuous.

However, the fact is, each government is allotted a 5 year term.

If a proposal cannot take immediate effect it can be introduced in a timely fashion.

Detractors have touted the need for immediate action and implementation but have failed to analyse whether any of these proposals need revision/adjustment before final implementation.

The Prime Minister has to do what is in the best interest of the country and if that means delay or even abandonment of proposals that are not feasible or ideal, for the greater good, then that’s what The Prime Minister should do.

Mr. Holness cannot correct all social injustices, significantly reduce crime, create a plethora of new jobs and effect growth in a year or two, he is not a Messiah.

Let us set reasonable expectations for leaders.

Our Prime Minster has to be lauded for his ability to communicate and we expect that he will continue to communicate his intentions.

If he is unable to complete a goal within a stipulated time we expect that he will articulate these views. A nation’s imperative is to aspire for growth, development and prosperity.
