Reggae Boyz Target Sharper Attack as Guatemala Visit National Stadium

Jamaica’s struggles in front of goal have become one of Rudolph Speid’s main concerns ahead of the Reggae Boyz’s latest assignment, with the interim head coach placing particular emphasis on improving the movement of his attacking players.

Speid believes the problem has been less about Jamaica’s overall system and more about what happens away from the ball. He said training has therefore focused on sharpening the attackers’ movement in the hope that better positioning will create more scoring opportunities.

The Reggae Boyz will also have to find solutions without Leon Bailey, who is unavailable because of an ankle injury. Jahmarie Nolan has been called in as his replacement.

Speid views Bailey’s absence as an opening for others, pointing to Jamaica’s depth and the opportunity for players such as Renaldo Cephas, Kaheim Dixon and Tyreece Campbell to make their mark.

One player especially eager for tonight’s occasion is Walsall midfielder Courtney Clarke, who is preparing to represent Jamaica at senior level on home soil for the first time.

Clarke, who grew up in Hazard, May Pen, gained exposure with the national team during the Unity Cup in England. He believes that experience strengthened his confidence and is now looking forward to performing in Jamaica with his family able to watch him at the National Stadium.

The midfielder said he has been waiting for the opportunity and believes competition within the squad has driven the players to work harder as they seek a positive result.

Jamaica will host Guatemala at the National Stadium from 7:00 pm tonight in their opening match of the Concacaf Nations League A campaign.

Speid has had only three training days with the squad during the current international window, but he has played down concerns about the limited preparation time. His approach has been to make the most of the available sessions while concentrating on the immediate objective of getting results from Jamaica’s four matches.

Adaptability has also been stressed within the camp. Speid said the team must recognise what each stage of the match requires and respond accordingly rather than being tied to one approach.

Tonight’s fixture also gives Jamaica an opportunity to face an opponent that defeated them in their most recent official encounter. Guatemala secured a 1-0 victory over the Reggae Boyz at last year’s Concacaf Gold Cup, with Óscar Santis scoring the decisive goal while Steve McClaren was Jamaica’s head coach.

Speid has expressed respect for Guatemala’s style of play while maintaining that Jamaica is prepared for the challenge.

His current spell is another interim assignment with the national team. Speid previously took charge during the World Cup play-offs in Mexico in March and again at the Unity Cup in London in May before returning to the role last month.
