NIDS Cards Distribution Begins Monday for 300 Participants

The first 300 participants enrolled in Jamaica’s National Identification System (NIDS) pilot project will receive their national identification cards starting Monday, November 18.

The National Identification Registration Authority (NIRA), which oversees Jamaica’s civil registration and national identification systems, has announced plans to expand the rollout to additional individuals already in the system.

Once the pilot phase is complete in January, NIDS will be opened to the wider public.

During the official launch of NIRA at the Central Sorting Office in Kingston on November 15, it was revealed that 24 NIDS enrolment centres are planned across the country.

Contracts have been signed for eight centres, which will be the first to be commissioned. By mid-2024, the remaining centres are expected to be operational.

A mobile unit is also being developed to ensure that individuals in remote rural areas can access NIDS services. Additionally, NIRA will collaborate with the Jamaica Council for Persons with Disabilities to serve the disabled community effectively.

NIDS aims to provide a secure and reliable system for verifying personal identity, enhancing accessibility and convenience for Jamaicans nationwide.
