Olympic champion Noah Lyles has stepped in to defend sprinting legend Usain Bolt after NFL wide receiver Xavier Worthy outpaced Bolt’s 40-yard dash time.

Worthy, now a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, clocked a blistering 4.21 seconds during the NFL combine, surpassing Bolt’s best-known effort of 4.22 seconds.

Worthy’s achievement reignited debate over how football speedsters compare to world-class sprinters, with fellow NFL star Tyreek Hill also part of the discussion, having posted a 4.29-second time and boasting a personal best of 10.19 seconds in the 100 metres.

However, Lyles was quick to remind fans that Bolt’s 40-yard dash performance took place under far from ideal conditions.

On social media platform X, Lyles defended Bolt, writing:

“Do we have to show the video of him running that time with jeans, no cleats, and no warming up? Just to remind y’all.”

Lyles referred to Bolt’s attempt at Super Bowl LIII in 2019, when the Jamaican sprinting icon raced in sweatpants and sneakers on artificial turf, effortlessly matching the best of the NFL, even without the proper preparation.

The debate continues, but Lyles’ words remind everyone of Bolt’s raw athleticism, no matter the setting.
