JPS Volunteers Recently Planted 3,000 Trees Along Highway 2000!

In a significant effort to contribute to Prime Minister Andrew Holness’ Three Million Trees Initiative, volunteers from the Jamaica Public Service (JPS) recently collaborated with the Forestry Department in a successful Plant-a-thon.

The event, held along the picturesque Hartlands stretch of Highway 2000, aims to bolster the nation’s green cover and combat climate change.

A total of 3,000 trees found their new home during this event, with the Hartlands area now boasting a vibrant array of young trees, including varieties like ackee, neem, cedar, and apple.

The endeavour witnessed the active involvement of dedicated volunteers, including 88 JPS VOLTS (Volunteers On Location To Serve), members of the Private Sector Organisation of Jamaica (PSOJ), and enthusiastic community members.

The event marked a notable stride in the ongoing National Tree Planting Initiative, a pivotal campaign that seeks to address the pressing challenges posed by Climate Change.

Georgette Bolton-Smith, Manager of Programmes, Policy, and Research at the PSOJ, emphasised the far-reaching impact of climate change, underscoring its implications on economic, social, and environmental spheres.

Bolton-Smith reiterated the PSOJ’s commitment to the cause and urged other organisations and individuals to contribute to the initiative’s efforts.

Azalee Lawson, Manager of Environmental Affairs at JPS, expressed immense pride in the endeavour and the organisation’s longstanding commitment to the environment.

For over 25 years, JPS has been actively engaged in tree-planting initiatives across the island, fostering a culture of environmental stewardship.

Notably, the company has been a key participant in the Corporate Adopt-a-Hillside initiative, facilitating the planting of 16 hectares of trees in collaboration with various partners.
