Athletes participating in the upcoming World Athletics Championships, scheduled to kick off on Saturday, August 19, in the captivating city of Budapest, Hungary, have an enticing incentive to push their limits and shatter records.

World Athletics, the esteemed governing body of the sport, made a significant announcement on Wednesday, disclosing an impressive reward for athletes who manage to establish new benchmarks in their respective disciplines.

This exceptional award amounts to a substantial sum of US$100,000, contingent upon adherence to the customary ratification process.

According to a recent news release from the global authority, the performance leading to the award must constitute a noteworthy enhancement over the existing World Athletics world record.

The release iterates that performances that merely match the existing world record will not qualify for the coveted world record award.

Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone, a talented hurdler hailing from the United States, and Mondo Duplantis, an accomplished pole vaulter representing Sweden, remain fresh in memory as the recipients of the world record award from the previous World Athletics Championships, held two years ago in Eugene, Oregon, USA.

McLaughlin-Levrone’s awe-inspiring accomplishment involved a remarkable improvement in her own 400 metres hurdles world record, clocking an astonishing 50.68 seconds.

Meanwhile, Duplantis demonstrated his exceptional prowess by elevating the pole vault to unprecedented heights, masterfully clearing the bar at an impressive 6.21 metres.

With anticipation mounting, a throng of approximately 2,000 athletes hailing from around 200 teams are poised to converge upon the recently constructed National Athletics Centre situated in the picturesque Hungarian capital.

Over the course of nine thrilling days, these remarkable athletes will engage in a captivating competition, vying to etch their names in the annals of history by delivering exceptional performances at this year’s championships.
