People warned against eating mongoose in Jamaica
The Ministry of Health in Jamaica is warning that the consumption of mongoose meat
by persons could carry potential health risks. Head of Veterinary Public Health Dr.
Linnette Peters in an interview with CVM TV, stated that the ministry has received
reports that mongoose meat was served in St. Thomas at an annual festival held in the
parish. Mongoose meat is being consumed
mostly by men due to the belief that doing
so will boost their sexual prowess. The
Health Ministry Official informed that if
the meat is served or it is offered to eat,
persons consume the meat at their own
risk as the Health Ministry will not take responsibility for persons as there are currently
no provisions or regulations regarding the eating of mongoose.
Mongooses live in southern Asia, Africa, and southern Europe, as well in Puerto Rico and
some Caribbean and Hawaiian islands, where they are an introduced species.
There are 33 species, ranging from 1 to 4 feet (0.30 to 1.2 m) in length. Mongooses
range in weight from the common dwarf mongoose, at 10 oz (280 g), to the cat-sized
white-tailed mongoose, at 9 lb (4.1 kg).
