Jamaica to Face ‘Consequences’ Over PM’s Cuba Remarks — US Lawmaker

United States Congressman Carlos A. Giménez sharply criticised Prime Minister Andrew Holness on social media on Wednesday over comments Holness made about Cuba.
Responding via his X account, the Cuban-born lawmaker accused the Jamaica Labour Party of “cover[ing] up for the moribund dictatorship in #Cuba” after Holness shared a clip from the 50th Regular Meeting of CARICOM Heads of Government.
In his remarks, Giménez said it was “lamentable” that the ruling party would defend a regime he says has repeatedly interfered in Jamaican politics.
He then escalated his criticism, adding simply, “Jamaica will face the consequences!” in his post.
At the CARICOM summit, Holness had urged Caribbean leaders to “speak plainly” about the situation in Cuba and noted serious economic hardship, energy shortages and growing humanitarian challenges there.
Holness also highlighted potential regional impacts, saying a prolonged crisis in Cuba “can impact migration, security and economic stability across the Caribbean, including Jamaica.”
The United States government announced on Wednesday an easing of its ban on Venezuelan oil exports to Cuba, a measure that was originally imposed following political developments in Venezuela in January.
Caribbean leaders have been sounding the alarm about a deepening economic crisis on the island, which has struggled with fuel and energy shortages amid regional instability.
Following his criticism of Holness, Giménez praised Trinidad and Tobago’s Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, urging other Caribbean nations to “follow her lead” in strengthening ties with the United States.
Offering a contrasting view, he said Persad-Bissessar has governed with “moral clarity … and championed democracy in the region.”
