Michail Antonio Shares Update After Car Crash, Vows to Return Soon

Jamaican international Michail Antonio has expressed gratitude and optimism following his discharge from hospital after a serious car accident in early December.

The West Ham United forward, 34, shared a heartfelt message with fans as he begins his recovery journey.

“Happy New Year – and I’ll be back on that pitch soon,” Antonio wrote in a message posted on the club’s official website.

Antonio sustained a lower limb fracture in a one-car incident outside London on December 7 and required surgery. His recovery is expected to involve a lengthy rehabilitation process.

Reflecting on the life-changing experience, Antonio said, “Every year around this time, I’m asked what I’m grateful for, and every year I’ve struggled to find the right words. But this year, I know exactly what I’m grateful for: being alive.”

West Ham manager Julen Lopetegui had previously described the outcome of the crash as a “miracle.”

Antonio extended his thanks to the emergency services, the air ambulance team, and the staff at West Ham United. “I’m grateful for everyone who has helped me,” he said.

Since joining West Ham from Nottingham Forest in 2015, Antonio has made over 300 appearances and played in all 14 Premier League games this season before the incident.

In a show of solidarity, West Ham players recently wore “Antonio 9” shirts ahead of their match against Wolverhampton at the London Stadium, with the kit signed by Antonio and his teammates later auctioned off.

The initiative raised approximately $75,000, which was donated to the NHS and Air Ambulances UK.

“Everyone at the club would like to reiterate their heartfelt thanks to the first responders, emergency services, air ambulance staff and the NHS for the incredible support given to Michail in the wake of the accident,” West Ham said in a statement.
