Opposition Warns of Crisis in Education Sector Amid Declining Exam Pass Rates
Jamaica’s education sector is facing a crisis, according to Opposition Spokesman on Education, Senator Damion Crawford.
His comments come in response to the recent decline in the number of students passing Mathematics and English A in the 2024 Caribbean Secondary Education Certificate (CSEC) examinations.
The Ministry of Education reported that only 38.9 percent of students passed Mathematics, while 76.4 percent secured passes in English A.
Senator Crawford expressed concern over these results, highlighting the need for more students to graduate from secondary school with at least five subjects, including Maths and English.
He emphasised that improving these pass rates is crucial for increasing the number of students eligible to pursue tertiary education.
The Senator warned that this issue must not be ignored, as the opportunities for earning a living are diminishing rapidly.
The Opposition also stressed the importance of having at least one family member with a university degree per household, noting that such households tend to experience lower rates of crime, violence, and malnutrition.
