Historic! Jaydon Hibbert Becomes First Jamaican to Win The Bowerman Award!
Jamaica’s 18-year-old triple jump sensation, Jaydon Hibbert, representing the University of Arkansas, made history at the prestigious Bowerman Award ceremony held in Denver last night, becoming the youngest-ever recipient of the coveted title.
The award is given to the most outstanding American Male College Athlete in Track and Field.
Hibbert’s extraordinary achievement comes on the heels of an undefeated collegiate season in the triple jump, where he not only secured victories in the S.E.C and NCAA Indoor and Outdoor championships but also shattered decades-old collegiate and world under 20 records.
A visibly elated Hibbert expressed his gratitude and humility after receiving the award.
In his post-ceremony statement, he described the moment as a dream come true, acknowledging the significance of the achievement in light of his disappointment at the World Championship in Budapest.
Hibbert’s sweep of accolades marks a historic moment for the Bowerman Award, as he becomes the first freshman to clinch the title in the men’s category.
He joins the ranks of trailblazers Sha’carri Richardson of Louisiana State University in 2019 and Athing Mu of Texas A&M in 2021 as the third first-year student to receive this prestigious honor.
Meanwhile, on the women’s front, St. Lucian sprinter Julien Alfred was named the Women’s Award winner after a stellar season.
Alfred, representing the University of Texas, secured an impressive five NCAA titles in the 60 and 200-meter events. Her outstanding contributions to her alma mater made her a deserving recipient of the Bowerman Award in the women’s category.
