Jamaica’s Shericka Jackson has been named among the 11 athletes nominated for the Women’s World Athlete of the Year award.

The selection was made by an international panel of athletics experts representing all six continental areas of World Athletics, and the nominations highlight exceptional performances from various events worldwide throughout the year.

In a spectacular season, 29-year-old Shericka Jackson secured her second 200m title at the World Athletics Championships in Budapest.

She also earned silver medals in the 100m and 4x100m relay at the same event. Jackson further solidified her incredible year by winning the Diamond League trophies in both the 100m and 200m categories during the season-ending meet in Eugene, Oregon.

The impressive list of nominees includes Ethiopia’s Tigist Assefa, who clinched victory at the Berlin Marathon and set a new world marathon record.

Femke Bol from the Netherlands stood out by winning the 400m hurdles at the Budapest Championships and setting a world indoor 400m record.

The frontrunner for this year’s award is Kenya’s Faith Kipyegon, who triumphed as the World 1500m and 5000m champion, also setting world records in the 1500m, mile, and 5000m during the 2023 season.

Other notable nominees include Japan’s Haruka Kitaguchi, the World champion in the javelin, and Ukraine’s Yaroslava Mahuchikh, who is the World champion and Diamond League champion in the high jump.

Spain’s Maria Perez, who achieved a new world record in the 35km race walk, and Ethiopia’s Gudaf Tsegay, the World 10,000m champion and Diamond League 5000m titleholder with a new world record, are also part of the stellar lineup.

The USA’s Sha’Carri Richardson, the newly crowned World champion at 100m and bronze medalist at 200m, and Venezuela’s Yulimar Rojas, who secured her fourth consecutive world title in the triple jump and added the Diamond League title to her impressive accomplishments, are among the nominees as well.

Bahrain’s Winfred Yavi, the 3000m steeplechase World champion and Diamond League titleholder, completes the outstanding group.

The winner of the Women’s World Athlete of the Year award will be determined through a three-way voting process, with the World Athletics Council’s vote accounting for 50% of the result, while the World Athletics Family’s votes and public votes each carry a 25% weight.

Voting concludes on October 28, and the finalists will be announced on November 13-14, with the winners revealed on December 11 through World Athletics’ social media platforms.
