Sheffield Wednesday Announce Darren Moore’s Shock Exit

Former Reggae Boy guided the Owls back to the English Championship last month

Darren Moore, an ex-Jamaican international, has left his role as Sheffield Wednesday head coach by mutual consent. The 49-year-old was expecting to tackle another English Championship season with the Owls, after grinding out hard-fought promotion via the play-offs from the third tier last month.

Moore, who twice represented Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz, and his backroom staff left earlier this week after just over two years at the helm. The former defender was credited with arguably one of English club football’s greatest comebacks. He became a target for online abuse after losing the first leg play-off semi-final 4-0 to Peterborough United. Then masterminded an astonishing 5-1 victory in the second leg, winning a place in the final courtesy of a 5-3 penalty shootout success.

May’s gutsy extra time 1-0 triumph over Barnsley Town in their League One play-off final at Wembley Stadium seemed to be the start of something special for Moore.

However, Sheffield Wednesday chairman Dejphon Chansiri has pulled the plug on Moore. He’s quoted on the club’s official website of swfc.co.uk: “The journey of Sheffield Wednesday with Darren has been in many ways unique and always as a team. In the football industry, journeys come to an end and now is that time, which we both agree.

“The mutual respect we have for each other is immense on a personal and professional basis and I offer my sincere thanks for the dedication and commitment Darren has given to our club.”

Birmingham-born Moore played over 500 games for a plethora of English teams. He moved into management with Premier League strugglers West Bromwich Albion in 2018, where he scooped a coveted Manager of the Month award.

He then spent two seasons in charge at Doncaster Rovers before crossing Yorkshire to join ambitious Sheffield Wednesday, where he tasted relegation before steering them back to the Championship through the play-offs despite having amassed an astonishing 96 points last term.

Moore told swfc.co.uk: “Both the chairman and myself have been determined to get this club back into the Championship. I’m delighted this has been achieved.

“I hope the club continues to develop and will soon fulfil the dream of mine, which was to take them back to the Premier League where they belong.”

As Jamaica’s head coach Heimir Hallgrimsson’s role is under scrutiny without a win in his six games at the helm, and the Boyz about to tackle the CONCACAF Gold Cup, then Moore could be in the mix as a potential replacement.

Jamaica face a tough ask in their group games, needing to finish in the top two places to book a quarter-final spot. They kick-off against the US, with the defending champions buoyant under interim head coach B.J.Callaghan after scooping the CONCACAF Nations League last weekend.

Then they have a showdown with Trinidad & Tobago’s Soca Boyz before meeting St. Kitts & Nevis’ Sugar Boyz.

Should Hallgrimsson fail to progress from the group with the two-time Gold Cup finalists, then Moore may be worth a consideration by the JFF and their shirt sponsors adidas.
