Fatal Shootings By Police Increase By 45%
Data from the Independent Commission of Investigations (INDECOM) indicates that there has been a 45 per cent hike in fatal shootings by police since the beginning of the year.
A recent report by INDECOM states 64 persons were fatally shot by the police between January 1 and Thursday, May 25.
The number of persons who were fatally shot by police during the same period in 2016 was 44.
Assistant Commissioner of INDECOM Hamish Campbell, recently shared his thoughts on the surge in fatal police shootings.
He is quoted by RJR as saying:
“We’ve never interfered with the role of the police officer in conducting criminal operations… but this positioning that an increase in crime in Jamaica should automatically result in an increase in fatal shootings by the police is flawed when we are pointing out that over 36 per cent of those who are shot or injured do not have a weapon; so they are not confronting armed criminals a significant portion of the time.”
INDECOM continues to investigate the shootings that occurred this year.
