Cut The Crap! – Jamaicans Are All Equal Regardless of Political Affiliation
I shamelessly presented myself at the Gayle Constituency Office recently to seek dialogue with Jamaica’s newly-appointed Minister of National Security, Robert Montaque.
No, I was not there as a sycophant to congratulate Minister Montaque for receiving the highest number of votes in the entire island in the recent General Elections.
Being the MP for Western St Mary, he was the right person to speak to about my proposed Apprenticeship Scheme for young persons aged between 18 and 24 years. So mi shame tree bun down when I insisted I speak to him.
But on my way from the office, I heard a woman say: “So what she here for? She nuh PNP supporter?”
I have no problem stating that I am NOT interested in political “cas-cas” and who wears orange or green, who is in “power” and who is not. Yes, my parents are staunch PNP supporters. So much so, that my brother and I were victims of revenge the day after the 1980 General Elections. He was stabbed across the stomach, I was knocked unconscious by a guy called “Buss-Up” and woke up on my mother’s settee.
I do not blame the JLP supporters for their actions as those were crazy days; at least 1,000 JLP and PNP young Jamaican men died as result of gun warfare before the Elections.
So back to the present. I seek funding from the Constituency Funds to launch the Agriculture element of my apprenticeship scheme – four young people are to be engaged in cultivation and reaping of crops on a pilot programme for one year, with the view to being supported to enrol in the Agricultural College in Portland. Having lived in Diaspora for more than 20 years, I am immune to this political division.
The Gayle Police has pledged support by agreeing to facilitate thematic workshops for youths on “Anger Management”, “Law and Order”, “Smoking Cessation”. Okay, some marginalised youths pressing their hand middles on the streets are not in favour of attending any event hosted by the Police, but I am working on them. 🙂
The graduates from the high schools will start seeking opportunities in June, and some have already registered with the programme for assistance in writing documentation for work placements, voluntarism or to secure employment before going unto higher or further education.
So lady, the one who alluded to my parents’ political affiliations, mi have this thing set out for ALL young people in St.Mary and I do not give a rat’s posterior which political party their parents support. Time we stop this foolishness in our country. Bless all.
