Swine Flu Emergence in Jamaica Has Doctors Scared Amid Vaccine Shortage

A female doctor recently became Jamaica’s first patient to die from complications associated with the H1N1 virus, commonly called ‘Swine Flu’.

The Jamaica Medical Doctors Association, JMDA has now shared its concern about the availability of flu vaccines for its members across the island.

According to the JMDA, the National Chest Hospital was supplied with 20 vaccines for its 50 staff members

The JMDA says at the St. Ann’s Bay, Annotto Bay, and Port Maria Hospitals, the vaccine supply ran out within two days.

It says the University Hospital had started vaccinating staff last week but quickly ran out after supplying the most critical staff working in the Intensive Care Unit.

The JMDA says the supply at the Kingston Public Hospital ran out within two days.

Reports from the JMDA say the Mandeville Regional Hospital exhausted its supply of the vaccine on Monday.

According to the JMDA, doctors in health centers are also struggling to find the vaccine.

It says this is dangerous as the doctors are working on the front line and mingling with patients with flu-like symptoms.

The JMDA says the H1-N1 vaccine is currently out of stock at most health centers.
