A Necessary Change….For Those Abroad

The worst thing one can do is to rely on others for financial support, especially from those who live abroad.

It doesn’t take a survey to see the level of disrespect that is meted out, on Facebook, to many who chose to exercise their constitutional right and civic duty to vote. Whether one votes for the JLP or the PNP, it is nobody’s business to influence a person’s choice with ridicule and embarrassment. If one chooses to vote for a change in government, it doesn’t mean that it’s the better choice but an attempt to try something new other than the rhetoric of old political stagnation.

We desire a lot more than poor healthcare and health facilities; judicial irregularities and inconsistencies; corruption; educational deficiencies; high crime rate; and exploitation of our natural resources among others.

The point is that, if one is going to be lazy and constantly dependent on handouts then, by all means, cut them off but don’t discount their choice because you chose not to be here to do so yourself. You got your opportunity and we are happy for you. We know that you have been re-cultured, re-educated and re-institutionalized but we, too, can do all that here with change.

You don’t need to indicate that no one should look to you for assistance because that person made their own choice. Do you think Obama lives here? Ok. That means our situation will not change in the short-term but can be built steadily with short term goals and strategies until we achieve the long-term goals.

The jokes should stop but remember where you are all coming from and the choices you made that were as questionable as ours. You got an opportunity for yourself and that’s good. You choose to give back and that’s even better. Yet the best thing is not to lose yourself in pride by ridiculing and discounting your own. I voted for change and none of my friends and family have kept me confined to the choke-hold of threats because of my choice. We never voted because we are good at making bad choices but because we chose to have a voice. We do so instead of being on Facebook, commenting on and liking other people’s opinions and not formulating our own.

We appreciate your will to survive elsewhere and still touch base with us, even contributing in very personal ways, but don’t inflate your ego and drown your kindness with any partisan bias. If family means anything then you’d know that blood never changes. Likewise, if friendships mean anything you already know that:

“Time displaces physical surroundings but never affects the unique hold or bond of such a personal connection called friendship.”

I am not angry with you at all but I just want you to make a choice too. You can easily disconnect with those you have issues with or continue to work in maintaining a civil and personal relationship with your loved ones, but grow beyond the immaturity and scorn quickly. Remember: “Life doesn’t come around twice so live this one well.”

With all my love,
