12 Police Office Officers wounded in Prison Disturbance!
Two of the inmates wounded in a disturbance at the Savana-La-Mar police lock-up in Westmoreland yesterday remain in hospital.
Seven of the men who were being held at the lock up were wounded during the incident and had to be taken to hospital. Head of the Westmoreland police superintendent Carol Mckenzie adds that another prisoner who was stabbed in the eye by other prisoners remains at hospital.
The stabbing occurred prior to the disturbance. Meanwhile , the Westmoreland commanding officer says the twelve police personnel who were wounded in the incident were treated at hospital and sent home.
Superintendent Mckenzie says calm remains at the facility and those in lock up received visitors today. Prisoners at the lock up reportedly began shaking the grills and behaving in a boisterous manner including setting fire to the cell yesterday.
Police also said chunks of concrete which were dislodged were thrown at police personnel injuring a dozen of them. Superintendent Mckenzie explained yesterday that disturbances often occur when prisoners from the corporate area are taken to Westmoreland for circuit court.
Meantime, Superintendent Mckenzie says after an examination of the cell at which the disturbance occurred it was determined that the facility can be used. The police had earlier suggested it was likely to be condemned.
