Reggae Boyz Eyeing Spot in Gold Cup Final

Jamaica’s Reggae Boyz should now be brimming with confidence as they prepare to face Mexico in the semifinals of the 2017 Gold Cup.

On Thursday night, Jamaica produced a polished performance to beat Canada 2-1 and secure a place in the final four.

Shaun Francis scored in the sixth minute before rising star Romario Williams added a second in the 50th to hand the Boyz a commanding lead.

Junior Hoilett pulled one back for Canada on the hour mark, scoring arguably the best goal of the tournament thus far. His incredible strike sailed into the upper right corner of the net, past Blake’s outstretched arms. He managed to create space for himself and score despite being hounded by several Jamaica players.

This is the second time Jamaica will be facing Mexico in the tournament, as the two teams played to a scoreless draw in the group stages. It was the first time Jamaica avoided defeat to Mexico in seven all-time Gold Cup matches.

Following the impressive win over Canada, goalkeeper for Jamaica – Andre Blake stated:

“It’s been great you know. I’ve just got to keep doing what I’ve been doing for the team, whatever it takes…..every game from here on in is a final so now we’re into the semi-finals, hopefully we can go in again and get three more points.”

Mexico are the overwhelming favourites to make it to the final but Jamaica has been resolute in defence and continue to become more creative while on the attack with each game.
