Jamaica on Mexico Mission to Tackle World Cup Opponents

Reggae Boyz aim to bounce back from 2026 Unity Cup disaster with behind closed doors friendly

Rudolph Speid has another opportunity to impress the Jamaica Football Federation (JFF) when he leads the Reggae Boyz into battle against South Africa on Friday night.

The Jamaica interim coach, one of only a handful of applicants that the JFF are currently considering, has just 13 members of his squad selected for the Unity Cup.

As it was a makeshift squad for the 2026 Unity Cup in London, Jamaica football fans failed to turn up in their droves as the organisers anticipated and resulted in virtually empty stands at Charlton Athletic’s The Valley stadium.

Jamaica’s 2-0 semi-final midweek success over minnows India was a breeze, but they limped to a hefty 3-0 Unity Cup final defeat against an experimental Nigeria team last Saturday.

Since that disappointment, on top of Speid’s failure to secure a FIFA World Cup berth by tasting a play-off defeat to DR Congo, the JFF have re-advertised their vacancy for a head coach.

This could very well be Speid’s parting shot with Jamaica unless if he can somehow mastermind victory over South Africa’s Bafana Bafana, which would be the Boyz’ first-ever success. Jamaica have locked horns with Bafana Bafana five times, with four matches ending in stalemate.

As Speid and South Africa head coach Hugo Broos are both defensively minded, then Saturday’s showdown behind closed doors in Mexico could end up as scoreless draw.

This friendly seems to have been a closely guarded secret in Jamaica, despite Broos revealing news of the friendly last week and referring to the game as a test for his troops ahead of their World Cup campaign. Yet Jamaica’s squad is more like their C-team than even their reserves.

The friendly will be played behind closed doors at the Estadio Hidalgo, home to Liga MX outfit Club de Futbol Pachuca, with Bafana Bafana favourites to bag victory although understandably none of their players will want to potentially suffer an injury before the World Cup kicks off.

Broos urgently needs to get his side finetuned following such wastefulness in front of goal against Nicaragua last week. Despite dominating the match, they had to settle for a 0-0 World Cup send-off in Johannesburg.

South Africa will open the 2026 FIFA World Cup tournament in Mexico City with the curtain-raiser against co-hosts Mexico on 11 June. They travel to Atlanta to play Czechia on 18 June, and return to Mexico for their final group game against notoriously energetic South Korea on 25 June.

Bafana Bafana are world-ranked no.82, 11 places behind the Boyz. They heavily rely on most of their squad playing in the South Africa top tier, with just a hatful of players from overseas.

There are plenty of changes in Speid’s 22-strong squad for the Mexico trip from his Unity Cup selection.

He has opted for just two shotstoppers, leaving out US-based Joshua Grant. Coniah Boyce-Clarke, who played both Unity Cup games, and Mount Pleasant FA’s Tafari Chambers are retained.

There’s been a defensive shake up following the thumping from Nigeria. Joel Latibeaudiere, Dexter Lembikisa, Damion Lowe, Odin Samuels-Smith and Marlon van de Wetering are surplus to requirements while the trio of Christopher Ainsworth, Jeovanni Laing, Ronaldo Webster remain. Richard King, US-born centre back Jon Bell, Robino Gordon and Tarick Ximenes have been given the nod for the friendly.

Speid has kept his four midfield maestros of Brandon Cover, Courtney Clarke, Nickyle Ellis and Dwight Merrick. With the trio of Tyrese Hall, Isaac Hayden and Adrian Reid Jr. called up.

While upfront only Charlton Athletic’s Kaheim Dixon and Tivoli Gardens FC’s Nickalia Fuller have been recalled by Speid. Due to the lack of firepower in London, Speid has brought in Dwayne Atkinson, Khori Bennett, Dajaune Brown, Ronaldo Robinson and Trivante Stewart.

The Boyz and Bafana Bafana settled for a share of the spoils in their initial four meetings in 1999, 2003, 2005 and 2009.

Yet the last time this teams clashed, just 562 spectators witnessed the Boyz being beaten 2-0 at South Africa’s 2010 World Cup training camp in Offenbach, Germany.

Saturday’s hastily arranged friendly between Jamaica and South Africa is of most benefit to Bafana Bafana, although an overwhelming win by the Boyz could propel the JFF to consider appointing Speid as permanent manager.
