Jamaica Make Dominant Start with 59-Goal Commonwealth Games Victory

Jamaica’s captain Shamera Sterling-Humphrey praised her team’s defensive discipline after the Sunshine Girls limited Trinidad and Tobago to just 22 goals in their opening Commonwealth Games outing at Glasgow’s Hydro Arena on Saturday.

Sterling-Humphrey indicated that the team had set defensive targets for each quarter and was encouraged by how closely those objectives were achieved.

She also stressed that reducing turnovers would be vital against stronger opponents later in the competition, noting that mistakes would prove far more costly in tougher fixtures.

The convincing performance came as Jamaica secured an 81-22 victory to launch their Pool B campaign in emphatic fashion.

The world’s third-ranked side established control from the opening whistle, leading 24-5 after the first quarter before extending the advantage to 43-12 at half-time. They moved further ahead at 60-20 by the end of the third period before utilising the full squad during the closing quarter.

A standout display came from UK-based shooter Azara Wilmot, who marked her senior debut by converting 33 of her 41 attempts to lead the Jamaican scoring against a youthful Trinidad and Tobago outfit.

Attention now shifts to Sunday’s clash with New Zealand as the Sunshine Girls pursue consecutive victories. The Silver Ferns also made a winning start after defeating hosts Scotland 74-44 in their opening Pool B encounter.

Elsewhere at the Commonwealth Games, Sabrina Lyn progressed to today’s final of the women’s 100m breaststroke, while Jamaica’s men’s 3×3 basketball team claimed one victory from their opening three matches.

Boxer Martez Cope is also scheduled to begin his campaign today when he faces Lesotho’s Pooana Khoahli in the men’s 65kg round-of-16 contest.
