Jamaica Defeat Martinique as Ellis Scores and Assists

Jamaica’s senior men’s team strengthened their World Cup playoff build-up with a 2-0 friendly victory over Martinique at the Stade Pierre Aliker in Fort-de-France on Saturday.
Nickyle Ellis broke the deadlock in the 22nd minute before later setting up Daniel Green in the 64th to secure the result.
Representing Racing United at club level, Ellis netted his maiden goal for the national side in just his second outing.
For Green, the strike marked his second international goal and his first since 2018.
Head coach Rudolph Speid expressed satisfaction with the overall display, noting that his squad maintained firm control throughout the contest.
“I thought they started sprightly, very well initially, but I think as soon as we scored, they had to dig a little deeper,” said the coach.
“I thought they put up a really good fight until we scored the second goal and I suppose we were just in cruise control. The game would have dropped in quality somewhat when they started to make changes and ourselves,” he explained.
Historically, the triumph represents Jamaica’s first victory over Martinique since 2001, when Andy “Bomber” Williams delivered the decisive goal.
Assessing the opposition, Speid indicated that Martinique provided a worthwhile examination for his players ahead of sterner tests.
Next on the schedule is a FIFA World Cup playoff encounter against New Caledonia in Mexico on March 26, with the possibility of facing DR Congo on March 31 in the final for a place at this summer’s tournament.
