Jamaica Wraps Up Commonwealth Games with 19 Medals

Jamaica closed the multi-sport competition in eighth place overall after collecting 19 medals, made up of 10 gold, four silver and five bronze.

The final addition to that tally came on the netball court, where the Sunshine Girls secured silver after a 56-48 defeat to New Zealand in Sunday’s championship match.

Veteran shooter Romelda Aiken-George led Jamaica’s scoring effort with 32 goals from 36 attempts, while Shanice Beckford contributed 16 from 18. The final also marked the second meeting between Jamaica and New Zealand within seven days.

Track and field accounted for 18 of Jamaica’s medals and saw the country finish second in the athletics standings. The team earned 10 gold medals, along with three silver and five bronze, during a highly successful campaign.

One of the standout performances came in the mixed 4×400 metres relay, where Jamaica produced a dramatic victory.

Djanea Oakley, already crowned women’s 400 metres champion after winning in 50.21 seconds, received the baton in fourth position before producing a remarkable anchor leg to carry Jamaica to gold.

Zandrion Barnes, Leah Anderson, Delano Kennedy and Oakley combined to clock 3 minutes 10.96 seconds. England finished second in 3 minutes 11.58 seconds, while Nigeria claimed third in a season-best 3 minutes 12.85 seconds.

Jamaica’s gold medal haul was evenly spread across the programme, with six titles coming on the track and four in the field.

Samantha Hall captured the women’s discus crown, Jordan Scott triumphed in the men’s triple jump, Tajay Gayle claimed the men’s long jump title and Romain Beckford secured victory in the men’s high jump.

The country’s remaining athletics medals included silver finishes from Fredrick Dacres in the men’s discus and Ackelia Smith, while Shantae Foreman earned bronze in the women’s triple jump and Llyodrica Cameron added another bronze in the women’s shot put.

The Sunshine Girls had booked their place in the gold medal match after upsetting Australia in the semi-finals a day earlier, setting up the title showdown with New Zealand.
