Jamaica Rescue Dramatic Draw Against Canada with Last-Gasp Penalty

Jamaica preserved their unbeaten run at the Concacaf Under-20 Championship after Sean Leighton converted a penalty deep into stoppage time to secure a 2-2 draw with Canada in Puebla, Mexico.

The dramatic finish came in the 12th minute of added time after a lengthy delay, ensuring both teams completed Group C with five points.

The result left Canada on top of the standings by virtue of a superior goal difference, while Jamaica finished second. The two nations are now set to meet again in the quarter-finals after progressing from the group stage.

Canada had overturned Jamaica’s first-half advantage during the second period. Valter Sedin levelled matters in the 56th minute when his effort from inside the area deflected off a Jamaican defender before finding the net.

The Canadians then moved in front in the 80th minute after Marius Aiyenero converted from the penalty spot following a handball by Kimarly Scott inside the box.

Jamaica were later awarded a penalty of their own when Anyole Peter handled the ball while attempting to block a shot. Leighton stepped up after the delay and calmly beat goalkeeper Nathaniel Abraham to rescue a point.

Earlier in the contest, Jamaica had broken the deadlock in the 21st minute through Canada-based forward Jahmarie Nolan, who finished from close range after Brandon Bent delivered a low cross from the left. Bent had been released by a long pass from Santana Headley, while Jamone Lyle later missed an opportunity to extend the lead when he fired wide with only Abraham to beat.

The late drama continued a trend for the young Reggae Boyz, who have now scored in added time in all three of their Group C matches. Jamaica claimed a 2-1 victory over Honduras with a late winner in their opener before recovering from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Panama in their second outing.
