Lowest in 31 Years: Jamaica Closes 2025 With 673 Murders

Jamaica closed out 2025 with 673 murders, marking the first time in 31 years that the country’s homicide total has dropped below the 700 mark.
According to Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of National Security and Peace, Dr. Horace Chang, the figure reflects a 41 per cent year-over-year decline and represents 473 lives spared.
The reduction has been described by Dr. Chang as a historic turning point in Jamaica’s fight against violent crime, signalling progress toward long-term and sustainable crime reduction.
Central to the improvement, he noted, were deliberate, sustained and strategic measures aimed at strengthening the country’s overall security ecosystem.
Emphasis was placed on a coordinated national approach, with multiple arms of the security apparatus working in tandem to drive down violence.
Looking ahead, the security minister said the ongoing goal is to bring Jamaica’s homicide rate below the Caribbean average of approximately 17 per 100,000.
Achieving that benchmark, he explained, would require reducing annual murders to fewer than 500 going forward.
“I extend sincere appreciation to the men and women of the Jamaica Constabulary Force, the Jamaica Defence Force, the Major Organised Crime and Anti-Corruption Agency, our correctional officers, all the security teams and all partners across the national security architecture. Your collective efforts have changed the trajectory of our nation, placing us firmly on the path to long-term sustainable crime reduction.
“This achievement belongs to all Jamaicans. Together, let us protect this hard-won peace and press forward to what we can and must become – a safer and more peaceful Jamaica,” he urged.
