Favourable Nations League Draw Offers Interim Boss Another Shot to Convince JFF

Rudolph Speid will tackle the start of 2026/27 CONCACAF Nations League as interim head coach, with Jamaica aiming to net a new manager in January.

Speid was expected to be unveiled as the permanent head coach in April. Failure by the Jamaica Football Federation’s (JFF) board of directors to reach a unanimous decision resulted in the Cavalier FC technical director continuing his interim capacity.

He failed his initial task of navigating the Reggae Boyz to the FIFA World Cup finals, beaten in extra time by DR Congo in February. The 62-year-old oversaw Jamaica’s 2026 Unity Cup success over India in London, but could only watch in dismay as Nigeria thumped his troops in May’s final.

Speid returned for a hastily-arranged June friendly against South Africa in Mexico, which helped his chances as his experimental side held Bafana Bafana.

Although the JFF originally set a deadline for the end of June for managerial applications, they seem so unconvinced by the 44 names (including Speid) that they will continue their search into next year.

Yet Speid has a golden opportunity to prove his worth to the JFF as Jamaica have been handed a generous draw in the fifth edition of the Nations League.

The Boyz have been drawn in Group B, along with El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Martinique and Suriname.

While Group A includes 2026 World Cup participants Curacao and Haiti, the unfancied pair of Dominican Republic and Nicaragua as well fallen stars Costa Rica and Trinidad & Tobago.

Teams will play games both at home and away in the Swiss-style Group Stage format between 21 September and 6 October, with the top two nations progressing to November’s quarter-finals.

If Jamaica can qualify for the Nations League two-legged quarter-finals, these could potentially be Speid’s last matches in charge.

The heavy hitters of Canada, Mexico, Panama and the United States will kick off their Nations League campaign in the last eight, with the semi-finalists guaranteed a berth at next year’s highly lucrative CONCACAF Gold Cup.

The semi-finals, third-place match and final will be contested at a three-day Nations League Finals tournament inside Los Angeles’ SoFi Stadium in March.

Should Speid mastermind reaching the Nations League last four and booked a place at the 2027 Gold Cup, the JFF will surely have to rethink his suitability rather than keep subjecting Speid to the waiting game.

His recent seven games at the helm have resulted in four victories over minnows, defeats to DR Congo and Nigeria as well as a credible stalemate with South Africa.

Speid will arguably be hoping that it is third time lucky with the Nations League his latest shot at trying to win over the JFF.

2027 CONCACAF NATIONS LEAGUE
LEAGUE A
Group A: Costa Rica, Curacao, Dominican Republic, Haiti, Nicaragua, Trinidad & Tobago.

Group B: El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Jamaica, Martinique, Suriname.

Bye to quarter-finals: Canada, Mexico, Panama, USA.

Group Stage: 21 September–6 October.
Quarter-finals: 9-17 November.
Finals (semi-finals, third-place match and final): 25-28 March.

Nations who finish in fifth- and sixth-place will be relegated to League B for the next Nations League tournament.

LEAGUE B
Group A: Cayman Islands, Dominica, Guyana, Puerto Rico.

Group B: Barbados, Bermuda, Guadeloupe, Saint Lucia.

Group C: Bonaire, Cuba, Grenada, Saint Kitts & Nevis.

Group D: Belize, French Guiana, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Sint Maarten.

Group Stage: 21 September–6 October and 9-17 November.
Championship (semi-finals, third-place match and final): 22-30 March.

Group winners will be promoted to League A, and nations who finish in fourth-place will be relegated to League C.

LEAGUE C
Group A: British Virgin Islands, Montserrat, Turks & Caicos Islands.

Group B: Anguilla, Antigua & Barbuda, Aruba.

Group C: Bahamas, Saint Martin, US Virgin Islands.

Group Stage: 21 September–6 October.
Championship (semi-finals, third-place match and final): 22-30 March.

Group winners and the best second-place finisher will be promoted to League B.
