Jamaica Ends Tokyo Worlds With 10 Medals After Double Silver Finish
On the last day of the Tokyo World Athletics Championships, Jamaica wrapped up its campaign with two silver medals, bringing the island’s final medal count to 10—comprising one gold, six silver and three bronze.
The women’s 4x400m and 4x100m relay teams both earned second-place finishes, while the men’s 4x400m team ended in seventh. Jamaica did not contest the men’s 4x100m final after a baton mishap in the semi-finals.
Battling wet conditions inside Japan’s National Stadium, the 4x400m quartet of Dejanea Oakley, Stacey-Ann Williams, Andrenette Knight and Nickisha Pryce clocked a season-best 3:19.25. Team USA secured victory in a championship record 3:16.61, with the Netherlands following in third at 3:20.18.
Opening the race, Oakley produced a strong 50.50 split to hand over the baton in second place just behind the Americans.
Williams ran 49.59 on the second leg, holding Jamaica’s position before Knight completed her section in 50.66.
On anchor, Pryce delivered an impressive 48.50 but had to hold off the Netherlands, anchored by Femke Bol, to seal the silver.
According to Williams, the team had to dig deep against powerhouse finishers Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone of the US and Bol of the Netherlands but trusted each other throughout.
The medal marked Jamaica’s fourth straight podium in the women’s 4x400m at a World Championships, continuing a tradition of eight medals across the last 10 editions.
Reflecting on the achievement, Williams said the squad drew motivation from Jamaica’s long history of excellence in the event.
The night closed with Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce making her final appearance on the global stage, leading off Jamaica’s 4x100m relay team that secured silver in a season’s best 41.79. The US edged them with 41.75, while Germany placed third in 41.87.
