Michail Antonio Seals Watford Move After Injury-Hit Road Back

Michail Antonio’s efforts to re-establish himself in English football have taken another step forward, with the Jamaica international signing a one-year contract with Watford after spending the past month training with the Hornets.

The 36-year-old most recently played competitively in April for Qatari club Al-Sailiya, making four appearances during his time there.

His Watford move follows another attempted return to the English game which fell through because of injury.

Antonio had been close to joining Brentford, but tore a calf muscle the day before he was due to sign for the Bees, ending the proposed move.

He had also trained with Leicester City last December.

Antonio had already made his return to international competition with Jamaica by that stage.

At the Concacaf Gold Cup in the United States in June 2025, he came off the bench late in each of Jamaica’s three matches as the Reggae Boyz were eliminated in the group stage.

Those appearances came six months after the car crash which left him with a broken leg. Antonio has represented Jamaica 24 times and scored five goals.

His decade-long spell with West Ham officially ended when the club released him in June 2025.

Antonio subsequently returned to the Hammers as part of his rehabilitation, appearing twice for their Under-21 team in Premier League 2.

The serious injury that interrupted his career occurred four days after his final senior outing for West Ham.

Antonio featured in the Hammers’ 3-1 defeat to Leicester City on December 3, 2024, before suffering the broken leg in the car crash on December 7.
