Sweden Secures Third Place in 2023 Women’s World Cup with Victory Over Australia
In a showdown for the coveted bronze medal at the 2023 Women’s World Cup, Sweden outplayed the home favourites, Australia, with a convincing 2-0 triumph in Brisbane.
The Swedes, determined to exit the tournament on a high following a semifinal defeat, exhibited remarkable prowess on the field to clinch third place.
Taking charge of the encounter, Sweden forged ahead thanks to Fridolina Rolfo’s well-executed first-half penalty.
The Swedish side’s persistence paid off when Kosovare Asllani unleashed a powerful strike from outside the box in the second half to extend their lead.
From the onset, Sweden displayed their offensive intent, capitalising on a prime opportunity in the 30th minute.
Stina Blackstenius earned a penalty after being fouled by Clare Hunt within the penalty area, shortly after Rolfo had rattled the crossbar with a header.
The responsibility fell on Barcelona striker Blackstenius to convert the spot-kick, which she expertly dispatched to grant Sweden a valuable advantage.
Australia’s goalkeeper, Mackenzie Arnold, exhibited exceptional reflexes just before halftime, denying Filipa Angeldahl’s close-range effort and preserving her team’s hopes.
However, the Matildas struggled to contain Sweden’s counter-attacks. Asllani spearheaded a breakaway just past the hour-mark, coordinating with Blackstenius and driving the ball into the net with precision, leaving Australia with an insurmountable deficit.
Despite their resolute efforts, Australia found themselves hampered by fatigue after seven gruelling matches. Their extraordinary journey concluded on a subdued note, as they battled to regain their footing but fell short against Sweden’s organised defense.
