Upcoming Report to Detail Economic Impact of Temporary Airport Runway Shutdown
A comprehensive update on the economic repercussions stemming from the temporary closure of Sangster International Airport’s runway last Thursday is anticipated to be released shortly.
The closure led to the cancellation or diversion of numerous flights, leaving hundreds of travellers stranded as they were notified of delays or cancellations to their itineraries.
Transport Minister Daryl Vaz announced on Tuesday that the Ministry of Tourism is presently collecting data to assess the economic aftermath of the incident.
During an appearance on Radio Jamaica’s program “Beyond the Headlines,” Minister Vaz further disclosed that the ongoing Operational Safety Audit and Assessment at Sangster International Airport will determine culpability for the events that led to the brief runway closure on the aforementioned Thursday.
Following a meeting with stakeholders from the aviation and tourism sectors, the Minister received an initial report on the incident on Monday.
Consequently, Minister Vaz has issued directives for the Jamaica Civil Aviation Authority and Airports Authority Jamaica to collaborate with an independent team in conducting the audit.
A comprehensive report stemming from this audit is scheduled for submission by August 31.
Minister Vaz noted that the forthcoming report will shed light on the sequence of events that transpired. However, he emphasised that the preliminary report has not yet provided a detailed account of who should shoulder the responsibility for the situation.
