The Story Of Jamaican And Leicester City Legend Wes Morgan
The Jamaican international has set the standard very high for not just young Jamaican footballers, but black football players globally.
Westley Nathan Morgan is the first Jamaican player (Reggae Boy) to have won a Premier League title. He is also the first black man to have captained an English Premier League team to success which was done in the 2015–2016 season.
After scoring in a 2–0 win over Sevilla on March 14,2017 Wes Morgan became the first Jamaican player to score a goal in the Champions League. Winning by that margin also helped the team to qualify for the quarterfinals of the tournament. It is also worth noting that he was captain of the Reggae Boyz team in a match against Canada in 2014. In terms of success with the national team, he was a part of the 2015 Concacaf Gold Ccup squad that made it to the final for the first time.
Westley Nathan Morgan was born January 21, 1984, in Nottingham, England. His career took off in the academy of Notts County. The footballer played extremely well for the junior teams and drew the attention of Nottingham Forrest scouts. In 1999, Morgan was invited to the youth system of the new club.
It took the defender three years to reach the professional level and earn an opportunity to join the main team. He played in over four hundred games for Nottingham Forrest and helped them gain promotion from the English Football League one system in 2007–2008 season before joining rivals Leicester City in 2012.
After one and a half seasons playing for Leicester City in the championship, Wes finally won some silverware as captain of the team when he helped them to win the 2013–2014 season. In his debut premier league season, he scored two goals and two assists in 37 games while picking up a red card in the process.
One season later, Wes and his Leicester City team shocked the world when he helped them to win their first ever premiership title. In their title–winning season, Morgan played all 38 of the team’s matches. In his final season for the club which was the 2020–2021 season, Wes helped Leicester win the club’s first F.A Cup title as he further cemented his place as legend of the club.
At the end of his club career, the defender racked up an impressive 715 professional appearances with 27 goals.
In terms of his other accolades, Wes was the Leicester City player of the season for the 2012–2013 campaign. He was included in the Football League Team of the Decade (2005–2015), along with being included in the 2010–2011, 2012–2013, 2013–2014, 2015–2016 Professional footballers Team of the Year.
In 2016 he was named in the Concacaf Best eleven. Now Wes Morgan is still involved with Leicester City in terms of being an executive and is a part of the Professional Footballers’ Association’s board. With all these accomplishments there is absolutely no doubt that Westley Nathan Morgan is a Jamaican and Leicester City legend.
