Corruption in Transport
The recent death of five commuters on a Brown’s Town bus underscores the corruption and lack of respect for life in the transport industry.
What is sad is that the bus that ran afoul of the law is owned by a police officer.
I believe a significant contributor to Jamaica’s ‘loose’ transport system is the ownership.
Many mini buses are owned by police officers and their demonstration of power and brute force is an impediment to a good transport system.
When a system of ownership is in the hands of those who the public rarely trust, and who are part of the corruption system, it is dangerous as the commuting public will be at risk.
How can a bus lacking a road licence and registration be allowed to transport folks from Kingston to Browns Town, some 60 plus miles away?
Our authorities need to act now and act impartially to protect the lives of our people.
We hope those who the government has entrusted to regulate these buses will act and work diligent and without fear.
