Usain Bolt Registers for Manchester Veterans Football Team

Usain Bolt’s attempt to make the transition from athletics to professional football included a brief spell in Australia in 2018, when he scored twice in a friendly for Central Coast Mariners.
Eight years later, the Jamaican sprint legend has surfaced on a football roster again, this time in England. Bolt has been registered as a player for Wythenshawe Vets FC, according to the Football Association’s Full-Time website.
The south Manchester club competes in the Premier Division of the Cheshire Veterans Football League, a Sunday league competition for players over the age of 35.
Bolt, now 40, joins a Wythenshawe squad containing several names familiar to Premier League football fans. Former England and Liverpool striker Emile Heskey is among those registered, along with ex-Manchester United captain Antonio Valencia.
The squad also features former Everton forward Oumar Niasse, Newcastle striker Papiss Cisse and former Manchester City players Stephen Ireland and Nedum Onuoha. Premier League champions Joleon Lescott and Danny Drinkwater are also part of the group.
Wythenshawe had already drawn attention last year after bringing together a veterans’ squad containing a number of former Premier League players.
The club has yet to publicly announce Bolt’s registration and has been approached for comment.
Long before appearing on Wythenshawe’s player list, Bolt established himself as the fastest sprinter in history. He remains the world record holder in both the 100 metres and 200 metres, with both marks set at the 2009 World Athletics Championships.
The eight-time Olympic champion ended his athletics career in 2017 before turning his attention towards his long-standing interest in football.
That pursuit took him to Central Coast Mariners the following year. Bolt also received a two-year offer from Maltese club Valletta, which he rejected. He subsequently signed a contract with the Australian side but departed eight weeks later.
