Ato Boldon: Elaine Thompson Herah’s Medal Days Are Over

Olympic medallist and sports analyst Ato Boldon believes Elaine Thompson Herah has already won her last individual medal on the global stage.

The five-time Olympic champion, who clocked 10.54 seconds in the 100m to become the second-fastest woman ever, is also the only female sprinter to secure back-to-back Olympic sprint doubles in 2016 and 2021.

Boldon argued that such achievements have set a standard almost impossible for her to repeat.

At the 2022 World Championships in Eugene, Oregon, Thompson Herah claimed bronze in the 100m behind her Jamaican teammates before going on to sweep the sprint double at the Commonwealth Games that same year.

She last competed in 2024, running only twice, as recurring Achilles problems limited her preparation and performances.

Speaking on TalkSports, a radio show hosted by Grenadian journalist Michael Bascombe, Boldon described her career as extraordinary but suggested her body has absorbed more than most athletes can withstand.

“It’s like going to find a car that has a ton of miles on it, and, yeah, you pretty it up, and then maybe it looks good and now you ask it to go and do what it used to do in the beginning, and it falls apart,” he said.

The Trinidad and Tobago great insisted his remarks were never meant to be disrespectful, noting that he considers Thompson Herah’s Olympic double-double as one of the greatest feats in sprinting history.

Boldon further admitted he would gladly accept being proven wrong if she were to return and win again, joking he would “eat that crow with pepper sauce” should it happen.
