Evin Lewis Powers West Indies to Dominant Win Over England in ODI Series Opener
Evin Lewis powered the West Indies to an eight-wicket victory over England in the rain-affected first one-day international on Thursday, smashing eight sixes in an aggressive innings of 94.
His performance led the West Indies to comfortably chase down England’s modest total of 209 at the Sir Viv Richards Stadium.
First-time captain Liam Livingstone top-scored for England with 48, including two sixes, in a challenging display on a difficult pitch.
England struggled to adapt, bowled out in 45.1 overs with the ball gripping and holding up for seamers and spinners alike. A 72-run partnership between Livingstone and Sam Curran (37) provided the backbone of England’s innings before left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie dismantled the middle order, taking 4-41.
Lewis reached his half-century off 46 balls, driving the West Indies innings before rain interrupted play.
The interval between innings was extended by rain, though no overs were lost. Another delay after the 15th over reduced the West Indies innings by 15 overs, but they still needed only 157 under the Duckworth-Lewis System.
Lewis’ aggressive display included a 118-run opening stand with Brandon King, who contributed 30 runs.
Keacy Carty was unbeaten on 19 when the West Indies clinched victory with 9.1 overs remaining, taking a 1-0 lead in the three-match ODI series.
Returning to the ODI squad after nearly three years, Lewis narrowly missed back-to-back centuries, following up on his recent unbeaten 102 against Sri Lanka.
The second ODI is set for Saturday, with the third on Wednesday, before the two teams face off in a five-match Twenty20 series.
