Elaine Thompson-Herah’s Triple Olympic Bid Thwarted by Injury
Elaine Thompson-Herah, the reigning Olympic champion in the sprint double, has withdrawn from the upcoming 100 meters event at the National Athletics Championships.
This decision opens the door for a new champion to emerge ahead of the Paris Olympics next month.
Initially slated to compete solely in the 100 meters after opting out of the 200 meters, Thompson-Herah will now be absent from the entire four-day event starting Thursday.
This follows her limited appearances this season, clocking times of 11.30 seconds and 11.48 seconds over 100 meters.
In her latest race at the New York City Grand Prix on June 9, Thompson-Herah appeared to sustain an injury, needing assistance off the track and later seen icing her foot. Subsequently, she traveled to Germany for treatment.
Thompson-Herah, a five-time Olympic champion, aimed to join Usain Bolt as the only athletes to achieve three consecutive sprint double titles at the Olympics, having won both the 100 meters and 200 meters in Rio 2016 and Tokyo 2020/2021.
In a brief statement on social media on Wednesday night, she expressed her determination with the words, “I will be back.”
