Jamaica’s Wayne Pinnock commenced his 2024 athletics season with an outstanding display at the New Mexico Collegiate Classic in Albuquerque.

The Arkansas junior dominated the men’s long jump, claiming victory with a world-leading distance of 8.34m, surpassing his previous indoor best.

Pinnock expressed gratitude for a successful season opener, attributing it to a return to a familiar venue and meticulous preparation.

Despite only having three attempts, Pinnock’s second try became decisive after a foul on a potentially longer mark in the initial round.

Reflecting on his accomplishment, Pinnock mentioned revisiting the drawing board to refine his approach for upcoming competitions.

In the women’s long jump, Ackelia Smith, another Jamaican representing Texas, showcased her ability by winning with a world-leading mark of 6.85m, improving her NCAA-leading record.

Kevona Davis of Texas, representing Jamaica, secured a commendable fourth place in the women’s 200-metre invitational with a time of 22.90.

Despite enhancing his indoor best, Pinnock maintains the No. 10 position on the collegiate all-time list, ranking No. 3 among Jamaicans indoors and No. 4 on the Arkansas all-time list.

His 2023 achievements include a silver medal at the World Athletics Championships with a distance of 8.50m.
