Shericka Jackson and Antonio Watson Honoured as Jamaica’s Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year for 2023

Shericka Jackson and Antonio Watson were recently celebrated as Jamaica’s Sportswoman and Sportsman of the Year, respectively, at the prestigious 2023 RJRGLEANER Sports Foundation National Sportsman and Sportswoman of the Year Awards ceremony.

The glittering event took place at the Jamaica Pegasus Hotel on Friday, drawing together some of the nation’s top athletes, sports enthusiasts, and dignitaries.

Shericka Jackson, at 29 years old, claimed the coveted Sportswoman of the Year award for the first time after a stellar 2023 season.

The highlight of her year came when she successfully defended her World 200m title in Budapest, clocking a phenomenal personal best of 21.41, the second-fastest time ever recorded.

  

Jackson’s dominance extended to the 100m category, where she secured silver with a swift time of 10.72.

Concluding her remarkable season, she clinched the sprint double at the Diamond League Final in Eugene, delivering impressive performances of 10.70 and 21.57 in September.

The talented athlete also set a new personal best in the 100m, recording 10.65, the fifth-fastest time ever, to defend her National title in July. 

On the men’s side, Antonio Watson made history by becoming the first Jamaican man in four decades to clinch the 400m gold at the World Championships.

The 22-year-old runner stunned the world with a massive personal best of 44.14 in the semi-finals, followed by a gold-medal-winning performance of 44.22 in the final.

Watson’s outstanding form also earned him a silver medal at the National Championships in July, where he clocked an impressive time of 44.54.

Watson’s exceptional feat on the track not only secured him the Sportsman of the Year accolade but also earned him the people’s choice award, reflecting the widespread admiration and support for his remarkable achievements.

  

Danielle Williams was named the runner-up for Sportswoman of the Year, while Hansle Parchment received the runner-up title for Sportsman of the Year.
