Reggae Icon Beres Hammond Receives Honorary Doctorate from UWI

The University of the West Indies (The UWI) has conferred an honorary Doctorate of Letters upon Beres Hammond, a reggae virtuoso whose career spans an impressive five decades.

Hammond, who was one of the 14 eminent figures honoured during The UWI’s Class of 2023 graduation ceremonies, was celebrated for his exceptional contributions to the realm of Jamaican music.

Known for his velvety, soulful vocals, Beres Hammond has been a cornerstone in the reggae genre, his music serving as a bridge across generations.

His impromptu performance at the ceremony was met with rapturous applause, embodying the spontaneous spirit he is celebrated for.

Speaking with The Gleaner, Hammond shared his heartfelt gratitude for the honor, emphasising the serendipitous nature of his career and creative process: “I never plan things, it just happens- vibes and everything follows in the right place at the right time.”

Having risen to fame with his debut release “The Wanderer,” Hammond has since released 22 solo albums, each cementing his status as a musical legend.

His influence on the industry was previously recognised in 2013 when he was awarded the Order of Jamaica.
