Mason Greenwood Scores First Goal for Loan Club Getafe as Heimir Hallgrimsson Expresses Interest

On Sunday night, Manchester United loanee Mason Greenwood found the back of the net for the first time while playing for Getafe, securing a 2-2 draw against Celta Vigo.

The 22-year-old forward, who joined the Spanish outfit on loan this summer, scored with a well-placed right-footed shot at the far post, momentarily giving Getafe a 2-1 lead.

However, Celta Vigo fought back, resulting in a share of the points.

Greenwood’s goal comes in his fifth appearance for Getafe, adding to his one assist from 230 minutes played for the club.

His performance has generated excitement among fans and the Getafe faithful.

Getafe’s other goal in the match came courtesy of Borja Mayoral, while Jonathan Bamba and Jorgen Strand Larsen found the target for Celta Vigo. Despite the draw, Getafe currently sits 11th in the La Liga standings, having secured 10 points from nine games this season.

Following this month’s international break, Getafe and Mason Greenwood are set to face Real Betis on Saturday, October 21 at 3.15pm UK time. Mallorca awaits them as the next challenge on Saturday, October 28 at 5.30pm.

Greenwood’s journey to Getafe was driven by Manchester United’s decision to suspend him in January 2022 due to allegations of attempted rape, assault, and coercive control.

However, in February of the same year, The Crown Prosecution Service dropped all charges against the player, and Greenwood has consistently denied the allegations.

In the wake of an internal investigation, Manchester United concluded that it would be in the best interest of Greenwood’s professional career to seek opportunities elsewhere. Consequently, he made a move to Getafe on deadline day.

Meanwhile,  Head Coach of Jamaica’s National Senior Men’s Team, Heimir Hallgrimsson, has expressed his willingness to consider including Mason Greenwood in the national squad, despite the player’s history of legal issues.

This gesture indicates the potential for Greenwood to make a return to international football, representing Jamaica on the international stage.
