Independence Day to be Celebrated on August 7, 2023
The Ministry of Labour and Social Security has officially announced that this year, Independence Day will be observed on Monday, August 7, 2023.
The decision is in accordance with Section 2 of the Holidays (Public General) Act and its corresponding schedule, which designates the 6th day of August as the date for celebrating Independence Day.
As per the Act, Independence Day is traditionally marked on the 6th of August.
However, when August 6th happens to fall on a Sunday, it is customary to shift the observance to the following Monday to allow citizens ample opportunity to participate in and enjoy the festivities.
Each year on August 6 (formerly observed on the first Monday in August), Jamaicans commemorate the liberation from British dependence, marking the moment when the country gained control over specific functions previously governed by Britain.
This occasion also serves as a tribute to all the individuals who played pivotal roles in facilitating the transfer of power.
Furthermore, educational institutions and government offices remain closed on this auspicious day, allowing citizens to actively participate in the celebrations and take part in various patriotic activities. Families and friends gather to share meals, exchange greetings, and reinforce the bonds that tie our nation together.
