The Championship’s Top Scorers So Far

As the Championship season enters its last leg, it’s a good time to assess how things are shaping up before the final sprint.

It’s been an unusual season with the impact of the coronavirus pandemic making behind-closed-doors football the norm, but thankfully the Championship and the rest of the Football League has been able to continue despite the challenges posed by the pandemic.

There is always an interesting battle for the Championship’s golden boot award, and this season is no different. Let’s take a look at the players who lead the scoring charts at the time of writing.

Ivan Toney (25 goals)

Sitting pretty in the race for the golden boot is Brentford’s Ivan Toney, who has been a revelation this season after joining from Peterborough United last summer. Many felt that Brentford would struggle following the departures of Ollie Watkins and Saïd Benrahma, but Toney has stepped up to the mark with considerable aplomb.

The 24-year-old has been impressively consistent, and with 25 goals to his name already, Brentford will be hoping that Toney’s form will fire them to promotion. The Championship betting odds certainly favour the Bees.

Teemu Pukki (20 goals)

It’s no surprise to see Norwich City’s Teemu Pukki high up in the scoring charts, with the Finland international boasting plenty of pedigree when it comes to bagging goals in the Championship. Norwich currently sit top of the Championship table, and they have Pukki’s goals to thank for much of their success this season.

Pukki had a decent campaign in the Premier League for Norwich last season, but it’s fair to say that he didn’t quite produce the same rip-roaring form in the top flight as he had in the Canaries’ promotion campaign. You can bet that the 30-year-old will be desperate for another crack in the Premier League to prove his scoring prowess.

Adam Armstrong (19 goals)

Although Blackburn Rovers lie stagnant in the bottom half of the Championship table, the scoring form of Adam Armstrong has given supporters something to be cheerful about. Since arriving permanently from Newcastle United in 2018, Armstrong has established himself as a reliable Championship goal-getter for Rovers and has notched an impressive 19 goals this season.

There’s no doubt that other clubs will be sniffing around for Armstrong’s signature come the summer, but Blackburn will be hoping they can hang onto their man.

Lucas João (18 goals)

Having led the Championship table in the early part of the season, Reading are still very much in the hunt for promotion and much of that is down to the goals of Lucas João. The Portuguese forward joined Reading for the 2019-20 season, but this campaign he has really come alive, bagging 18 goals so far as the Royals seek to gain promotion for the first time since they were relegated in 2013.

Kieffer Moore (16 goals)

Cardiff City are hovering outside the play-off places, but the form of Kieffer Moore will have fans of the Bluebirds optimistic that they can make a late charge for promotion. With 16 goals to his name so far, Moore has proven that he still has an eye for the net after earning a good reputation with Barnsley in the 2018-19 campaign.
