COVID-19 Cases Up To 471, Schools To Reopen In September

Jamaica’s tally of COVID-19 cases has risen to 471.

The most recent cases are a 20 year old female from Clarendon and a 12 year old male from St. Catherine, who are both contacts of a confirmed case.

Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton gave the update while speaking at a press conference Monday evening.

Dr. Tufton said 221 of the confirmed cases are connected to the Alorica call centre in St. Catherine; 35 cases are imported; 168 are contacts of confirmed cases; nine are local transmission with no epidemiological link; while 38 are under investigation.

  

Eleven more people have recovered, bringing total recoveries to 49.

Nine persons have died locally.

While speaking at a press conference on Monday evening, Karl Samuda, Minister with responsibility for Education announced that schools are to reopen their physical physical establishments on September 7, the start of the new school year.

He said the first 20 days following the reopening will be used to assess and reintegrate students back into school life.

Online and distance learning will continue until July 3.
