No Coronavirus Case In Jamaica – Health Ministry

During an emergency press conference on Tuesday, Health Minister Dr Christopher Tufton reiterated that there is currently no case of the novel coronavirus in Jamaica.

His announcement came amid concerns that there was a suspected case of the illness at the University Hospital of the West Indies (UHWI).

Minister Tufton said:

“Out of an abundance of caution, we wanted to make sure that was considered but certainly it does not fit the case definition,” Tufton said.

“Based on advice, there is no truth to reports that there is a case of coronavirus in the island,” Tufton confirmed, speaking at the press conference held at the Ministry of Health headquarters in New Kingston.”

Coronaviruses are a group of viruses that cause diseases in mammals and birds.

In humans, the viruses cause respiratory infections which are typically mild including the common cold but rarer forms like SARS and MERS can be lethal. In cows and pigs they may cause diarrhea, while in chickens they can cause an upper respiratory disease.

The official death toll from this new coronavirus has already surpassed 100 globally.
