Jamaica Finishes 3rd in Athletics at Rio Games
Jamaica has finished third in the athletics medal table at the Olympics Games.
Team Jamaica earned 11 medals and managed to win more gold medals than the successful team that represented the island at the previous games in London.
At the 2012 games Jamaica earned a total of 12 medals, 4 of which were gold, however in this year’s staging of the games, Team Jamaica earned an impressive 6 gold medals.
Kenya and the United States are the countries that sit above Jamaica on the athletics medal table.
Kenya earned 6 gold medals while the United States earned 13.
Jamaica earned its final two medals last night (August 20) courtesy of the men’s and women’s 4x400m relay teams.
The men’s team (2:58.16) finished second to the United States (2:57.30) while the women’s team also finished second to the United States after clocking 3:20:34.
The US women’s team won that event in 3:19.06.
However, without a doubt it was the world’s fastest man – Usain Bolt who stole the show by winning his ninth successive Olympic gold medal in the sprints (100, 200 and 4×100 meters ) 2008, 2012 and 2016, an unprecedented accomplishment in the history of athletics.
Jamaica’s medals include 6 gold, 3 silver, and 2 bronze. – Not bad for an island of approximately 2.7 million 🙂
