Five cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed in the parish of St Ann.

Dr. Deborah Weir, medical health officer for the parish on Friday (August 19) made the disclosure while speaking at a community meeting in St. Ann’s Bay.

Dr Weir stated that special attention is being given to pregnant women by health professionals and that the current number of suspected Zika cases stands at 264.

The Health Department and several state agencies have recently been collaborating as part of a Zika control program in the parish.

Chief Environmental Health Officer for the North East Region – Karen Brown also recently stated that the Tourism Enhancement Fund and Jamaica National Building Society are assisting in a clean-up exercise in a number of high risk communities across the parish.

According to Brown some 60 persons spanning 80 communities are employed in the exercise, which is aimed at eradicating mosquito breeding sites.

She is also urging residents in the communities to play their part in the effort to eradicate the Zika virus through regular clean-up activities.
